Goal Setting & Making your Winter Horse Care Game Plan!

Updated: Jan 24

As we all know it is October which means the leaves are changing colors and there starts to be a chill in the air. Some higher elevations even have already started to get some snow here in Colorado!

This got me thinking about the topic for today's episode, how this is a great time of year to start thinking about our winter horse care game plan. To make sure we have what we need before the first storm or freeze happens. In this episode I talk about 5 tips that will help get you started in making your own plan for your horses this winter. As someone who has worked in many different horse barns I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience of some practical ways to set yourself up for success and be organized at least when it comes to horse care in the colder months.

The five tips I will discuss in the podcast episode are:

  1. Make sure your horses' are meeting their nutritional needs and you have a deworming plan. This includes making sure they have access to water at all times!

  2. Blankets! This could probably an entire episode on it's own as there is so much that goes into them, but for this episode's sake I tried to shorter it as much as possible into the important points.

  3. Maintain a regular hoof care routine!

  4. Conditioning and winter exercise routines! From turnout time to proper cool downs, conditioning the winter is very important.

  5. Take some time to slow down, think about, and write down your long and short term goals for the next year!

For more details you will have to listen to the episode! Now I know every horse and rider are different and everyone has their own ideas when it comes to winter and horse care, but I hope these tips will help you get started or help you start thinking about you plans for winter. I believe this episode can help newer horse owners as well as experienced owners.
